The car broke down, was towed to this place. He charged 78.95 to look at it and then 300. Before I can get it back. Car is not fixed. The law is he said it was verbal and he wins

My son driving the car it broke down, was towed to this place. Some how he feels he had a okay to keep looking for stuff. And charged 300. After my son thought a bill of 78.95 was the only bill. So we lose our car or pay 300. How can we change this law he said she said. Because we lose. The car is not fixed.
