Complaint / Review
Quinlans Auto Service
Ripoff, dishonest, deceptive

On 11/8/06. I phoned Quinlans Auto Service and inquired if they had the resources to remove a 4.0L size engine from a 2002 Ford ranger and fix a valve with no compression. Mr. Chris Quinlan stated that he had the tools and he could complete the service. He quoted me $1200.

We dropped our truck off to Mr. Quinlan at his service garage on 11/9/06. Our explicit instructions to him were, pull the valve cover and valves to determine the reason for no compression in cylinder valve #2.

On 11/14/06, I phone Mr. Quinlan and inquired on the vehicle's status, as we had not heard from him since the 9th. He informed me that he had removed the valves and head and sent the valves to a third party repair shop to be machined. Already, he had not done as requested.

We began to hear statements from other consumers that they had been ripped-off by Mr. Quinlan. We heard so many of these reports that we decided to look into what he was claiming to do to our truck.

Over the course of a month, we found that he falsified the work done to our cylinder valves by the third party, and falsified the prices of the parts he ordered for our engine. He never showed us where or why these parts needed replaced. He never offered to give us any old parts.

The only thing that was wrong with our engine was that the spring in valve #2 was broken. There was no other damage and no other parts were needed.

Mr. Quinlan further tried to claim that our engine was producing metal shavings that he states was present in the oil. We examined the inside of the oil filter and found no metal shavings whatsoever. Mr. Quinlan then stated that he wanted to take our bearings out of our engine because he felt they were the source of the 'shavings'. I specifically told him NOT to take the bearings out. When we arrived the next day, he had taken the bearings out anyway. We had to pay Mr. Quinlan $1845 just to get our truck away from him. We drove our truck in to be repaired and had to have it towed out. He had our truck for over 30 days.

We had a ASE certified repair shop that is affiliated with a dealership for our make of truck tear the engine down completely. They found no internal parts producing any metal shavings and further found that there were no metal shavings present in our engine, as Mr. Quinlan had claimed. They also found that Mr. QUinlan did not have the proper tools to perform the job needed, which resulted in warped heads & improper timing. The cost of the damage Mr. Quinlan caused to our engine with his deceptive service was more than we could afford.

We had to pay $1000 for a used engine instead. We paid a total of $2391 to the dealership service shop for the tear down and assessment of the old engine and the purchase and installation of the used replacement engine.

I have reported Mr. Quinlan to the BBB, the Ohio Attorney General and the Federal Trade Commission. A search of our county court records has found that Mr. QUinlan has a pattern of deceptive behavior dating back to the year 2000.
