Egan rips people off! I wrote the BBB and have contacted my credit card company and here is what I wrote to my CC company for a chargeback:
I am disputing $433.37 of the total $663.84 paid to Egan Automotive Specialists, Inc, on 9/23/05 and am offering the following explanation as to why. Two days prior to being charged for this, I called for a quote on how much it would be to diagnose.
At that time I stated, it could be the fuel pump, but would like diagnostics performed before any work was done to be sure what the problem was. I was told it would be around $70 for diagnostics. My road side assistance company towed the car to the shop on 9/21/05, and Hank from Egan Automotive called that same night saying they would diagnose it in the morning.
The next day, Hank called with a diagnosis, and said it was the fuel pump and would cost $458.84 tax. A couple hours later, Hank called back and said he couldn't get in the trunk to the fuel pump and asked if he could send a worker out to pick up a key for the trunk. Hank then called a little later saying there is a second problem-the relay controller and would cost an additional $167.42.
At that time, I also asked about a payment plan options as listed on the ad in the yellow pages. He refused any type of payment plan. I also asked for my old parts to be put in the trunk, and he also refused. I said I wanted some proof that he would fix the car as I was beginning to suspicion something was wrong, but he also refused stating "a mechanic is in the business of fixing cars, not catering to distrusting women", at that point I asked him not to fix the car and I would have it towed somewhere else, but he stated since the repair was already started that I would have to pay the total bill even if I would take it somewhere else.
At that point I felt threatened and helpless as I had no idea what my rights were. The day the car was fixed, Hank called and said payment needs to be made with a credit card over the phone, prior to pick up, or the car would remain in the garage. I paid the charged amount, and when I picked up the car after shop closing hours, there was a massive oil leak, and had to fill up the car with oil, and it leaked out immediately.
Besides the apparent new damage to the car, this whole situation raises some questions. I had asked him not to fix that car after I knew he was being dishonest, and do not see what I would have needed to pay.
Also, I spoke to other mechanics, who said that he would not be able to diagnose the fuel pump as being bad if the relay controller was bad. Meaning he charged me for a diagnosis that he would not have been able to perform. The relay controller would need to be repaired BEFORE the fuel pump could have even be diagnosed. The mechanics I spoke to also said that a relay controller and fuel pump NEVER go bad at the same time (please see below for witness phone number - deleted).
Also, as stated by Egan Automotive, in order to get to the parts that needed replaced, he needed access to the trunk, which he did not have at first. So, he could get to the part to diagnose it, but not to fix it? With that being said, I am disputing the diagnostic charge, as it's obvious he did not diagnose the vehicle, as well as the fuel pump charge and labor for that.
I have no problem with the other charge, as that is the only thing that could have been really wrong with the car according to other mechanics and online research, as well as the fact the mechanic refused to give me my old part back, or any proof that there was a bad fuel pump in the car, or if it was even replaced.
Here is someone who can attest to the facts I am stating - Steve - certified mechanic - (phone number deleted - see below). I believe I am being more than fair for the simple reasons that my car is now needing to be fixed from the oil leak and the trouble Egan Transmission has put me through.
