Over three months ago I came across this website (by accident). Curious, I typed my name and state info into their system and clicked search button. To my surprise their system displayed my data and implied that I was a person with a criminal record. I was truly shocked. I have always been a hard worker with flawless reputation, I have never broken the law in any way. What criminal record? I needed to know! I grabbed my phone and called Instant Check Mate immediately. Unfortunately, their Customer Service was unable to answer my questions. They just simply stated that they didn't have access to my profile.in such a case I had no other choice but to spend $19.86 on their 1 month membership (or at least what I believed was 1 month membership) and sign into my new Instant Check Mate account to satisfy my curiosity and get answers to my questions.
I ran another search on myself and-obviously-the results returned nothing. Silly me... Why did I have to spend $19.86 to find out the truth I have always known? There is no criminal history linked to my name merely because I have never broken the law. How simple was that! However, I still had a question, but this time the question was about Instant Check Mate and their suspicious practices. Why would they imply that there was a criminal information on me? To have me (or someone else) want to examine it (which I did). And here we go, let's face it: they do not sell criminal records (because they don't have them), what they really sell are: promises of being in possession of such records!
Oh, I forgot to mention that this company has also violated the Privacy Act by disclosing my personal information without my permission.By personal information I mean: photos of my house, my current address, phone number, DOB, income, my spouse's name, my spouse's parents' names, phone numbers etc. Really! Every single detail was out there available to anybody. I was really angry. I called their Customer Service again to find out who gave them rights to post my personal info on their website. The lady I spoke with was quite rude saying that my info is public and they do not need my consent to use it as they wish. Wow! That was enough. I called them again only to find out that I need to send them a written request to opt out of their website and to have my profile removed from Instant Check Mate search engine. Lovely! 48 hours later my information was gone. So was my money.
As soon as Instant Check Mate Company got a hold of my credit card number, it began abusing it by continuing to charge my account every month (did I mention that back in May I agreed to only one $19.86 charge?) Again, I was speechless. I contacted my bank and submitted a dispute and then (as you have probably already guessed) called Instant Check Mate. Boy, oh boy, the Customer Service Representatives did everything to make me feel guilty. They said that I should have known that my membership would be automatically renewed every month (question: how the heck should I have known? Your website failed to indicate such an obvious fact and -unfortunately - I am not a God, I do not possess metaphysical powers to read your minds, guys?). At last, they agreed to credit one of the charges.
