I walked into the Burger King in a pleasant, upscale shopping area of Mexico City at the corner of Bolivar and Maderos on June 26. I thought I'd wash my hands before ordering a meal. I have traveled extensively in first, second, and third world countries, and this bathroom was the most revolting I've encountered. Ever. Anywhere. The toilet seats were heavily smeared with feces and other bodily effluvia. It was so nasty I wouldn't even go near either stall. Efforts at hand washing didn't go any better. At the sink, only one water tap worked and the other just sprayed bursts of water all over the place so that one could not even really get one's hands washed. There was no soap. I concluded that there was not enough money in the world to convince me to eat there. I fled. I anticipate nightmares about what kinds of diseases I might have caught from food that came out of that kitchen.
