This is a fast food chain found in a lot of food courts in malls. I have eaten there many times, with the most recent being yesterday, and I happen to know that the unethical prcatice described below has been happening for many years.
Here's what these guys do to unethically bump up their prices: No matter what menu item you order, it comes with rice. Accordingly, after you tell them which item you want, the first thing they ask you is "Would you like fried rice or steamed rice?" What they don't tell you is that if you select fried rice, they will add 29 cents to your bill. I checked out their entire billboard-style menu on the back wall (which is the only price list they have anywhere), and nowhere does it state that there will be a surcharge added to your total if you select fried rice instead of steamed. Additionally, the manner in which they pose this question to you, as quoted above, seems to imply that you have an even choice between the two types of rice. They never verbally mention to you that fried rice costs 29 cents extra.
The bottom line is that these people seem to rely on the fact that most people do not check their receipts when they buy their meals. And, for the most part, they are correct. However, it irks me that they are able to take advantage of their customers and pocket some extra cash in this manner.
