Bounced paycheck, Multiple employees, shifted blame

I was a cook at Joeys seafood. I worked for them for about 4 months. I had heard from one of the servers that someones paycheck had bounced. All the signs were there: they were increasing prices, paying their vendors in cash, and cutting back on labor. I began looking for another job and eventually resigned. I deposited my last paycheck in the bank and the next day spent it on bills. Six days later it bounced starting a chain reaction in my account. I fixed the overage charges to the tune of 300 dollars. (Plus the 220 for the check). I went to Joeys and confronted the manager. I had documentation from the bank and copies of everything. They claimed it was my fault it bounced because I waited too long to deposit it. I argued the point and they replaced the check and gave me 10 dollars for the bounced check fee. I was still out 300. They refused to help with that, even though the bank had written a nice letter explaining how their check had caused all of the problems. I later found out that the owner call my bank, and harassed the manager who had provided the letter, for about and hour. I told the manager (of the bank) not to worry, I had been advised by family not to take joeys to court. I still feel ripped off though. I don't make a lot of money and 300 dollars is a big hit to take. The business is still open. They are going through a name change calling themselves East Coast seafood.
