My girlfriend and I were fired without notice because we are lesbians. Jessie and Tammy, We are struggling to pay our bills and feed our 4 children at this point. We have a janitorial company together and had been working for my girlfriends (Tammy) long time friends Robert and Nancy Woodrum, managing their vacation rental. At the sudden death of Nancys husband, she employed us full time. She was dealing with the death of her husband and had no knowledge of how Robert ran the facility. We gladly ran in to save her day. We slowly terminated our other regular jobs to work for her full time. She had stated numerous times There is plenty of money here to keep everyone employed including her son (contractor).in a nut shell Nancy is a Jehovahs witness, Tammy used to belong to the same church as Nancy. Robert and Nancy have know about and have stated that Tammys sexual preference has never been an issue with them. But, it was very well know that because of their religion they wouldnt support Tammys lifestyle or talk about it. Nancys true feelings about us came out when Robert passed away. About month and a half after Roberts death, Nancy went to a Jehovah s witness revival meeting on a weekend with her daughter (Amanda). We took care of the facility, its paying guests, and Nancys dogs, which we took home with us to care for them for the weekend. Two days after she came home she started cutting us back on work and hiring it out to other companies without discussing it. She just simply stated that she had to cut back on her spending. Robert always printed out a monthly schedule for us. On the schedule is individual statements of how much they were receiving from clients weekly. A huge company oversight to put that info out there on a monthly maintenance calendar! At this time she had extra cash coming in, $12,000 for Roberts Porche. We were very well aware of how much their monthly bills were at the time and how much income was being made. Robert had a lot shared his personal information with us. He confided in us and told us that when Nancy would drunk she would hit him. Nancy is a self professed functioning alcoholic. We were at the facility working late one evening, Nancy was home drunk singing her favorite song to Tammy and I I drink alone by George Thorogood. Nancy started using Robertss SMART phone. She drinks hard liquor every evening, guaranteed by 8pm she is usually hammered drunk. Unfortunately, she learned quickly how to drunk call and text us. We have many incriminating texts and voicemail from her and her son. She stated to me personally during this time that she knows Im not gay I wasnt sure what to say in fear of losing my job. I said I dont know, but I know that I love Tammy, Nancy Well, I love her too but it doesnt mean I want to have sex with her! I dont know what your gonna do Jessie! Her tone has always been very condescending and judgmental. Tammy and I endured a lot of discriminating comments from Nancy, Robert, their friends and family. Robert constantly would make innuendoes as we were working ; Id like to watch you girls (sexually), whos the man of the relationship? He gossiped to friends of Tammys that I (Jessie) wanted him sexually, and am to pretty to be gay. On the final drunk call to us Nancy Said FUCK YOU Tammy I found someone to do the work for half of what you charge me, but Im willing to keep paying you if you get Jessie under control! She had been trying to get us to have a meeting to discuss our cut backs. We told her that we would not be having a meeting with her and her daughter, Amanda regarding this whole situation. They knew they were wrong, and were trying to make themselves feel better. We knew it was a bogus meeting and nothing would be accomplished. We have yet to understand what getting Jessie under control fully meant. We went out that night at Nancys request to pick up our equipment. She also took the keys to her salon in town that we had also been cleaning. That was the end of our job.
We worked hard for Nancy, usually not charging her for our total hours worked, because we were washing each others backs so to speak. She desperately needed help to keep the facility from going under and we enjoyed our job immensely. We are not greedy people. Were we making enough money to put anything back for savings-NO we had nothing in savings. But we were paying our bills and feeding the family comfortably. We loved Nancy and thought we could trust her.
Currently, we have borrowed $3000 from my father to make our rent and keep cell phones on for business as we do not have any work now. We paid Julys rent and now cannot possibly pay Augusts rent. We have made a few legal contacts but nothing serious. We need help. Our Civil Rights have been discriminated against.
Is there anyone who can lead us in the right direction?
