I received a letter today, March 21st from West Bay Acquisitions. They are a collection agency for the now defunct Hollywood Video stores. We had an account with Hollywood video over three years ago and have not used it since. Our account was up to date, all late fees paid, and no outstanding balances. This collection agency is trying to collect for unpaid late fees in the amount of $68.93 cents. There is no e-mail listed. There is a number you can call and instructions on the back out to "dispute" the charges, which must be done in writing. I did call and spoke to someone named Roland, who sounded like he was reciting a script. I told him I was not paying a cent of these made up charges and would be submitting my dispute in writing with a copy to the Texas State Attorney General's office as well as the FTC. He told me "fine, have a beautiful day". This is clearly a scam and it is concerning that these people may have still have access to credit cards and social security numbers that were required to set up accounts. They were used for automated billing at Hollywood Video. I would like to see soemone stick it too these guys.
