Unjust rate increase

We have been with Fleet for 5 years with a 7.9% interest rate. We have a very healthy credit limit and we opened a second account with them. After about two years we received the letter stating that our rate was going from 7.9 to 15.9%.

I called fleet asn asked why, and got the standard reply that our credit report indicated too many credit cards with high limits available. I explained to them that I had never been late and always paid more than the minimum, but that didn't seem to mean anything to them. Then I asked them if I was such a risk that they were raising my rate, why had they raised my limit on BOTH cards. The rep put his supervisor on who went through my account and stated that there was no valid reason for raising my rate. It would remain the same and a letter would come out immediately notifying my of the continued low rate. I did.

But now every year since, we get another letter stating the same thing, every year we call them and fight it and every year they have maintained the lower rate. This year they refused to do it, so I choose to " opt out". This is an ooption that allows you to keep your current rate, but the card is closed, and you can't make any new purchases, or they new rate will kick in. I recommend this to anyone else who is having this problem. I don't understand why a company would extend you credit if they don't want you to use it.
