My spouse was receiving calls at work from a blocked phone number. No messages were being left when he did not answer. Finally he got a call that had the phone number and tried calling back and a woman answered, asked if he knows me to which he responded yet but he wanted to know what the call was about and the woman hung up on him. So, I called the company today to find out what they wanted. The person I talked to spent a lot of time trying to belittle me and make me feel as if I don't know my rights. Turns out this is a debt that was a part of an identity theft from about 14 years ago! Not only past the statute of limitations, but the amount that was reported to me by the collector did not even sort of reflect the amount of the original disputed amount (much, much higher).
I let this guy, Mr. Jones, know that I am aware that it is violation for them to be calling my spouse at work on a debt that has been disputed years ago. He gave me a lot of lip about how that was not their fault but their client's fault. They bought the debt from someone else, blah blah blah, we use an automated caller so it is not our problem but yours. When I asked them how they even had my husband's work number since the name on the supposed debt is in a totally different last name he would just say it was on there when they purchased it. I told him that I am aware they are breaking the law and that I will speak to the state Attorney General. He started to give more crap about how it is not their problem so I put a prompt end to that call.
Beware of their practices. Shady, rude and violating the law. Apparently multiple states have investigated them for these same practices.
