Refusal to take back merchandise

My mother, who is elderly and too trusting, purchased the "Loral Educational Center" for me and had it delivered to my address. I have no idea where she found an advertisement for this material. It is supposed to make you rich. I have no interest in this information. I opened the package, having no idea what was in it. When I discovered the contents, I phoned the company and tried to send it back. I did not open the shrink-wrapped CD. I have no interest whatsoever in this kind of material. They would not take it back but did cancel the rest of the program that apparently would be coming. This is just wrong. Even if I had ordered this material, I should have been able to send it back if I had changed my mind and not opened the CD. I would not have objected to paying the shipping charges for the return. However, the $67 that my elderly mother paid represents almost one-quarter of her monthly income. I am sure that she felt that she was doing the right thing and that I would become very rich if I read this material so that she would ultimately not have to worry so much about money any more. She also did not understand that there would be more charges other than the $67.in my opinion, these people are guilty of taking advantage of the elderly in this situation. My mother is 86 years old and can easily be talked into a scheme like this. That does not make it right. She needs her credit card to pay for medicines and usually does not buy other things. I guess this sounded like something too good to pass up as far as she was concerned. I have had a serious talk with her and have warned her about buying these kinds of things. Whether somebody is elderly or not, if they change their mind after receiving something like this, they should be allowed to return it by paying for return shipping. If the company is worried that somebody might read the book or part of it and then try to return it, put some shrink wrapping material on that too. If it is not opened, it should be returnable.
