Changing policies and not notifying current customers of policy change

I called in to make my monthly payment as I always did and found that they are now charging a $10.00 fee to take phone payments. This apparently just started because I made my last month's payment with no problem.

When I asked why didn't they send out a notice to their customers, I was given the response that they do not do that and that they only updated their automated system. How does that help? Upstanding credit card companies send out notices of any policy changes no matter how little they may be and usually have some sort of grace period.

I tried arguing the fact, but still wound up being charged the $10.00 because otherwise, if I mailed it, the late fee charge would well exceed that amount. I now know to mail my payments well in advance and I plan on paying this off next month and never using them again.

This is ridiculous and this is just another way of them trying to get more money and interest out of you.
