I reciently applied for a car loan and was told by the loan officer that a "medical" collection that was on my report was extremely detrimental to my score. I was totally unaware of any medical debts and called them for copies.
First I spoke with a collector named Grant who was extremely unpleasnt then suposedly a manager named Brent called me back. I requested backup for the debt and he (Brent) argued with me for well over a 1/2 hour trying to make me pay. Grant also intially threaten to put this debt on my sons credit report!
The bill was supposedly from when I had my son and we were in the hospital. My son is 4 years old! This is a clear violation of the fair debt collect act to threaten such action as well as the fact they put it on my credit report without notice. The address they "may" have sent collection notices to was a PO Box and was closed in 2004.
Any mail from that PO box would have been returned to them. I did recieve thier "so to speak" backup today and it is just print outs from thier computer and nothing to tell me what the debt was for or about. Even the numbers on their cover sheet dont add up... Apparently the debt from the doctor was for $92.72 in 2005 and now they want $966.89!!!
I have already filed papers with an attorney because of their clear violations. And, if any of you do not know this already, you can be awarded up to $1000 per the Fair Debt Collection Act if you are threated, etc. Please Google it look it up if this has happened to you. I had another collection agency do this to me and I filed suit against them. Im not letting anyone threaten me or rip me off anymore!!!
