Company screws consumers when they reject a change of terms & want to continue making monthly payments

Exxon Mobil credit card company is unwilling to help the consumer if they reject a change of terms agreement. I rejected a new change of terms that exxon sent out to raise my interest rate (which I believe they did due to the consumer credit card bill of rights being passed by the Federal government). I am trying to pay off my credit cards and did not need a larger amount to pay off.

When I rejected the change of terms, I was told I would have to close my account in order to not have my interest rate increased. I spoke to a man in customer service to do this and was told information about closing the account. Nothing was mentioned that my minimum payment would be over triple what I had been paying in the previous months.

I called the company discuss the situation since I did not have $300 to pay the minimum payment (for at least the previous 6 months the monthly minimum due was around $85 to $90). I was told that the increase of the minimum due was because I was over the limit (which had been this way for at least the last 6 months and no additional fees were assessed) and rejected the change of terms which closed the account. My credit limit was $2600 but they allowed us to charge up to $3200 when gas prices where almost $4 a gallon.

I told the representative that I could not possibly pay the $300 they were requiring for the minimum payment. I told them that I had made a payment for $159 online today and needed to make payment arrangements since I could not pay the total amount due.

I was told by the representative that there was nothing they could do except put me on a payment plan of $370 a month for 6 months. She also said that since my account was only 6 days past due that was not long enough for them to offer me any other help and/or programs to help make the minimum payment to where I could pay it.

Basically, I am being punished for paying my bills, trying to set up a payment plan so that I could continue paying my bills, and for rejecting the change of terms. I will never do business with Exxon Mobil and Citigroup and will make sure to let everyone I know how this company treats their comsumers-at least the ones that are willing to pay their bills every month.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone else that has been taken advantage of for any situation like this. Consumers are being taken advantage of for the new bill of rights, paying their bills, and as taxpayers having to pay twice-once to pay their bill and then paying their taxes to bail out all of these corporations that made bad investments and did not manage their funds correctly.
