I recently received a letter from HSBC where I have a checking account. The letter concerned the recent theft of data related to Mastercard. Because of this theft they were issuing me a new card and account number. No problem. But in the fine print (which I always read) I found that they are now going to charge me $. 50 every time I use the card. I think it's appalling that I have to pay to access my own money. Granted, $. 50 isn't a lot, but I use my debit card for everything because it helps me track my purchases. A lot of merchants don't want to accept checks for the small purchases I make, especially at the gas station where I buy cigarettes. I guess I'll go back to using cash, or using the debit card from my credit union, which NEVER charges me to use the debit card.
