Blue Cross Blue Shield Of Michigan
Refund policy

When changing from one Blue Cross supplemental Medicare insurance plan to another, a cheaper one to be exact, Blue Cross will still deduct the premium until you tell them not to.

Being on a very limited income, I was shocked when Blue Cross raised the premium from $144-$162, and I switched to a plan with a zero premium. Blue cross deducted $162 from my account anyway, causing it to over draft. I called immediately upon discovering their error. Their response? Sorry, and by the way, we don't pay overdraft fees.

I called seven times over three days trying to get a supervisor to expedite my claim due to the severity of the consequences. The supervisor told me it takes three weeks to process a refund, and that's just the internal processing time. Once it is processed then it goes off to have a check written and then the check is mailed making the refund take 30 days. I then asked to speak to billing to see if I could get somebody to process this quicker. Not permitted. Blue Cross does not allow anybody to speak to billing; period. Their only form of communication is internal messages from Customer Service. Although each and every customer service representative gives you different information and time frames, they all do agree that nobody can every speak directly to billing under any circumstances.

Billing is portrayed as a group of trolls that live and work in a dank corner of the basement under the Blue Cross offices in Detroit. I have scoured the net for any phone numbers for them with no luck. Each new person will 'call me back' when they have heard from Troll Hollow, but so far none have.

I took Blue Cross about 5 seconds to raise my deduction from $114 to $162 apparently, but they cannot reverse the charge to my checking account under any circumstances, and cannot issue the refund, even thought their error has overdrafted my account three times in two days. Plus, now that I have scrounged up enough money to cover the overdraft that the created, the bank has basically locked up my account due to all the overdrafts. Help from Blue Cross? No; none. Blue Cross has told me that it isn't their fault that I couldn't cover their overdraft, and they have no plan to assist me in any way with my locked account, or their own inability to refund in a timely and fair manner.

The only reason I haven't change companies is because the date to do that is passed and if I cancel with them, I know that I will never see that money back.

Which brings me to this... How many people do you think Blue Cross has done this to? How much interested will they get on the possibly millions of dollars that they took from their customer's bank accounts and kept for 30 days?
