US Bank protects itself not custome

We are trying to rent our condo out & I posted it on Craig's list. We got a person over in London, England who said he had just graduated. He was coming to the US for research and had a sponsor that was going to pay for his room and expenses. (I should have known it was too good to be true). Anyway his Sponsor was sending me a cashier check for the first month rent and deposit. They did but they also sent me his travel expenses. He wanted me to wire the money to him as soon as I could b/c he wanted to get moved in as soon as possible.

When I went to the bank to make the deposit I told the teller to please hold the check and only make the funds available if they were real. She did she put a hold on it for 9 days.

In the meantime the guy sent 3-4 emails asking if it had cleared the bank. I told him that I told my bank to hold it until it had cleared. To make a long story short the check was bogus, US Bank froze my account (the fraud dept was treating my husband like we were the criminals). I understand that they are looking out for the bank, but we didn't do anything wrong. When I deposited it I told her I didn't know if it was real - that is why she put a hold on it. When it tried to clear they froze my account and it is now being closed. I didn't spend any of that money so all they would have to do it remove it from my account. I called the fraud dept again and they said it was up to the branch.

I went in to the bank where I deposited that check and the manager (very understanding) said it is up to the branch where we opened the account to reopen our account. That manager in Upper Arlington will not do anything. This all started on Wednesday and it is now Sunday. Of course it was both our pay week.

My account is frozen but I just checked online and my check cleared the bank on Saturday (should have been in there Thursday)? My question is we didn't do anything wrong Thank God I didn't wire him the $. What could I have done differently and is it legal for them to still accept my direct deposit after my account is frozen? They said it could take up to 7-10 business days to get our $ after the account is closed. They also charged me a fee ($19) and removed my cash bonus visa rewards of $40.
