Forced to pay additional processing fees

I misplaced my mortgage coupon. I finnally gave up trying to find it and contacted customer service for directions on what to do. They gave me the directions, but also urged me to pay via phone. I replied that would cost me a $20 costumer service charge. They replied that that was less than an $85 late charge. I replied that eight days should be long enough for the payment to reach them by mail.

I followed the directions cutomer service gave me and then mailed the payment using registered mail. A notice was left in AHMSI's post office box around 2:53 PM the on August 12th.By August 15th, they still had not signed for the payment. (I would think three days was plenty of time to accomplish this.)

Upon seeing that it was not signed for by the 15th, I was forced to go on-line and pay the $7.95 fee to process it electronically in order to avoid the $85 late fee. (I have never been charge a fee to do an electronic payment by other companies that I do business with.)

On the 18th, AHMSI finally signed for the mortgage payment that was sent registered mail. It appears that they delayed signing for the registered mail until after due date had past so that a late fee could be charged.

They also went ahead and processed the mailed payment in addition to the electronic one that was processed on the 15th, so I have now paid the August payment twice. I am still in the middle of trying to get this straightened out.
