We received a collections bill (my husband did, that is) for a $281.27 Verizon phone bill for a disconnected number we'd never had, nor heard of. It's kind of odd, because the number is one digit off from the one I previously had in that town (3188 and 3148). We've never received any other mail or call regarding this, nor had any knowledge about it at all!
They also said my husband's mother's name was listed as one of the people who had that PO Box number—they had no physical address— and they mentioned some other guy also that we'd never heard of (in connection with the PO Box number... Hmm). They said the bill was from 1998 to 1999 (we did not have that number then or ever). They somehow had my husband's SS# (scary). Even if it was his mother, or possibly one of her friends, she died about 5 years ago and I certainly hope we don't get stuck with this! The second person I talked with said that we were responsible for it, no matter what, since my husband's name was on it.
I called them 3 times—the first guy was okay, second female extremely rude, and the third so-so. I requested copies of the bills, and she said it would take 45 days or so, and was a bit vague about it.
I'm not really sure what to do next—maybe send them a registered letter claiming that's it not ours and that it's beyond the statute of limitations as to credit reporting?
I find this extremely upsetting and I am angry! I'll do whatever it takes to help stop these horrid parasites from ripping people off.
