What I did to get them to stop calling and threatening me

Write to them this letter using your own numbers and dates.

Dear Collections:
I received your bill, dated February 1, for service from AT&T in 1998, on February 6 at my home, located at the address above. The account number listed on the charge is XX-XXXXXXX
The total on the bill indicates that I owe $317.54. It also suggests that I may have received previous communication from CBCS. I am disputing the validity of this charge as I have had no knowledge of this charge that appears to be 10 years old. I am also disputing any previous contact from CBCS before February 6.
Before I even consider any action on this charge, which has clearly exceeded the (your state) statute of limitations; I must request that you send me an itemized list of the charges that clearly shows how you arrived at the total. I too request this written response within 30 days along with the intent of CBCS in regard to this matter. As you well know, consumer debt of this nature, valid or not, has a statute of limitations that has expired along with the credit reporting under the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act. If this charge is present or appears negatively on my credit report, I will file this with my attorney for further legal action and report this case to Attorney Generals Office and the Federal Trade Commission.

I must also add that I was treated very harshly and unprofessionally by your agent TMH on February 6 at approx 1700 EST when I made contact to gather information about this charge. I will refer this information and report this action to the (your state) BBB and the FTC, regardless of the outcome of this dispute.

I sent this registered mail with return reciept and got a response in 10 days stating that my account was closed and no further collections action will be taken. Keep in mind, it is only what I did and the statutes vary from state to state. Mine was an old (paid) account in Florida. I hope this helps someone... These guys are crooked and using loopholes in the law to re-open old cases. This BS is very legal and binding if you don't fight it right away.
