Deceptive offer for $5,000 Platinum Credit Card...

I received an offer in the mail for a Platinum Credit Card with a line of credit of $5,000.00 The Company, Peoples Credit First, requested a application/processing fee of $45.00 which I did send to them.

My check was cashed on october 9. During a conversation with a friend, the suggestion was made that I check on the company to be sure they were on the up and up since there has been so much fraud in the credit card business world. Unfortunately, my fears were realized when I came across this site, The complaint, and found many negative reports about this very company.

I telephoned the company several times, however I got only a message machine saying that there was no one available to answer my call at that time. I got this message about 5 times over the past week.

Today, I contacted the Better Business Bureau on the internet where a report about Peoples Credit First came up as having an "unsatisfactory record" with the Bureau due to unanswered complaint (s). It told of many other people having reported them because of their deceptive advertisement or mailing offering a major creedit card, when in fact it was a merchants card that could only be used by purchasing merchandise from the company itself.

I then telephoned Peoples Credit first, LLC directly today (10/22/02) with the telephone number listed by the Better Business Bureau, and it was a different number than the one I had been calling all week. I spoke with a Customer Service Representative named Kathy who was very rude and abrupt with me when I requested a refund of my $45.00. I informed her that I was not going to allow her company to take advantage of me, and that I was not going to no for an answer.

She immediately put me on hold and a person named Shaun, the Manager took the call. She informed me that the "call may be recorded." I advised her that I did not want a card that could only be used by her company, and I told her that I had been offered a credit card with a $5,000.00 credit limit. She told me that her company never said they were offering a credit card, however, I would receive a refund when I return the package that was being sent to me.

I informed "Shaun" that I was not going to accept a package from them, and that I wanted a refund now, not tomorrow or next week. I also told her that I had already contacted the Better Business Bureau, and that "I was recording the phone call"... She said "that's against the law", and she hung up on me! Very professional I must say!

I and a lot of other people have been taken advantage of by a company who exploits people who are trying to get their lives back in order.

When multiple complaints are filed against a company, why are there no penalties imposed and why are they allowed to continue to be in business?
