Let me start off by saying I accumulated this debt and therefor assume responsibility for it. I graduated highschool back in 2002 and got into college. I was in college for about a year, maybe a year and a half, all the while living with a roommate and paying all of my bills on time.
Well to make a long story short, my grandmother, who raised me, got really sick and passed away. I was left with all of the funeral costs, which totally drained me of all my money. I had stopped going to college when she got sick, and because of all the stress surrounding the situation I stopped working at my job because they said basically if I didnt quit they were going to fire me due to complaints about my performance, pretty much due to the fact I was under abnormal stress.including some funeral costs and just everyday expenses for the next 2 years, I ended up accumulating about 30k in debt to credit card companies.
Well I ended up getting back in school and am now about a year and a half away from graduating with my bachelors in business economics and political science. I am able to live off of my loans while attending school full time, and I have a friend who lets me live with him for free. The thing is, with everything that was going on I didnt have the money to pay any of the credit card bills and still dont. I dont live with my parents which is where they send the statements and thats where they call. My parents work and are always away on some business trip, literally never home. I dont have the best relationship with them, so we dont talk often anyway.
So basically I was unaware of all the phone calls that the credit card companies supposedly made. Now I just got a letter from the J A Cambece, which is one of the attorneys that works for Collection America, or something along those lines.
They brought a letter to my parents house a few weeks ago that says I have to pay all the money in a lump some in 20 days. Its probobly already been over 20 days. I know the law office tried calling my parents house in the past couple of days. I have no idea what to do right now. I owe 30k, I have no job, as Im taking 6 classes and realistically have no time, and I feel like Im going to be sued by a collection agency.
I own no property, have about $100 in my checking account, and dont own a car. IDK what they can possibily get out of me, but I didnt realize any of this was going to happen. I honestly thought that I could wait until I was out of college and just pay the whole lump sum the first 2 years I was working. Pay off like $1200 a month or something to that extent. These people have talked to my parents and have said that the credit card companies called numerous times per day and left message upon message. They used to leave me voice messages on my cell phone more than once a day when I used to have it but just used to delete them because they would be bogus messages usually going something like this "Please remain on the line and a rep will speak with you shortly".
Do any lawyers have any advice on what a college student should do about this? I plan on and want to pay my debt back, I just need about 3 years to do it, maybe 4. Please help Im desperate people
