We received letter from Mr. Ken Hughes of Merchants' Credit Guide Co. It stated that we had a debt owed to a company that we never even heard of. We placed a call to Merchants' and told them they made a serious mistake when they sent out this letter~wrong person. The agent on the telephone was very rude. My fiance' is disabled, and was confused a bit by speaking to her at first. I recalled the number and wanted the facts. Where did they get our address, who was the company, and how could this happen?
She told me "Why are you calling back, I already talked to someone already! I told her that he had brain problems, and I also asked her why his social security # was requested. It is illegal to ask it. She said "No it's not, and I told her oh yes it is!" I asked her what her name was, and she refused.
We spoke to a manager and they said that this letter was for another person by the same name, and they would take care of it~that answer was not enough for me. I read all the various websites, and I contacted the Attorney General's Office in Tallahassee, where there are over 75 complaints. I was then referred to the Illinois State Attorney General's Office, and I told them the situation as well. I then went as far as to contact the creditor on the letter to see if it was a real one. It was, but another person of my fiance's name.
I told the representative what happened at the credit card company, and told them that I had contacted all the various state agencies. I also stated that I wanted a letter from the credit card company specifying that there is no debt owed, and that it will be personally taken care of for our files.
It was a real nightmare, and yes, you are not alone, and do not sent them any money!
