Homecomings Financial foreclosed on our home without notice Ripoff

We recieved our mortage through a company on line. Within months our mortage was sold to Homecomings Financial without our request, yet we were informed. Being a first time home owner, we thought this was routine. It has turned out to be a nightmare. We have no written contract, so we really are not sure where we stand. Homecomings Financial foreclosed on our home with one payment deliquent by one month. We missed a January payment (I cannot say that it is the first payment to be late, but it is the only back payment we have). Several days ago our home was listed in our local newspaper under the forclosure section. Imagine our surprise when a friend brought this to our attention. Two days after the posting a man came to our home and taped the newspaper clipping to our window. Apparently that was our notification. We phoned Homecomings Financial and were told that we can fill out paperwork to try to defer the payment or we can pay $4800 by the end of the month. We are leaving the country in 5 days and will be gone for 2 weeks. We cannot risk filing the paperwork since we will not be around to see the result. We are now stuck paying $4800 to cover a $900 mortage payment. To make it even better if we can't get the money before March first the payment increases to $5800. I have no idea how a home can be forclosed on without notifying the owner first, and I do not understand how we can be responsible for the "lawyer fees" they are tacking on. If anyone can shed some light on this I would appreciate it.
