Deposited a check in March of this year, for a significant amount, into our TCF checking account. On the following month's statement, it showed that the check had been returned and an $8 fee charged for the returned check. We never received the returned check, nor had the writer of the check. Our account showed that the money was not deposited, but was debited for the $8.
HOWEVER, we found out the check HAD cleared TCF. We questioned the writer of the check and she sent us a copy of the cancelled check.in fact, TCF also sent a copy of the same cancelled check ($5 fee for that) showing it DID clear! Plus, there was no evidence on the check that it was ever returned (no "Insufficient Funds" stamp or any such mark).
The check shows even shows that it was supposedly deposited into our account, yet there is no record of that deposit to this date on our account, and we have statements to prove that. They falsely charged us for the returned check then stole our money.
When questioned, TCF agents required us to order additional statements (more fees for that), which took months. Then in calling back, they tell us 'they are still processing the matter'. Then they told us to contact the branch but would not give us the branch's phone number ("they are too busy there to answer phones" was their excuse). At the branch, they tell us they are also "looking into the matter" when asked.
It is now almost NOVEMBER and we still have not seen that money along with all the fees WE have had to pay to find it. They out-and-out STOLE our money and refuse to admit it. We are contacting the state attorney general to look into our case.
This bank is a RIP-OFF. They steal their customers' money then charge them fees to find it. Stay away!!
