I was sent a notice stating that I had won over $250,000 from an online gambling site. I called the tel. Number on the letter and they told me to deposit the check in my bank and then send a check for $2,600 to "Lucky Smith" and an address somewhere in Canada. I told the man I was skeptical that I would call back if I had any further questions.
I took the check to a friend at a check cashing store and called the US Bank, where the check was from. The account number on the check is valid, and the check itself is an actual check so it is not a counterfeit. However, there was no way of finding out if the check itself does or doesn't have funds.
I called my bank and asked them what the consequences would be if i deposited a check that did not have funds and still avoided an overdraft on my account. The bank told me there would be a charge of $7.00 in any case where a check without funds would have to be returned. I plan on depositing the check and waiting to see if it is returned before withdrawing anything.
