People's Rebate Association solicited a credit card offer to me over the telephone. I gave them personal information including my checking account number. The salesperson claimed that this was part of the application process. I was promised a written contract for an unsecured visa within 14 days. The only contact number they gave me was 1-866-514-6231.
After 14 days, I still had not received a contract. I called the 866 number only to find out that the number belonged to another company called "Customer Service International." The telephone representative stated that they were contracted by People's Rebate.
Customer Service International had my account information stored in their computer database. They told me that People's Rebate intended to charge $299.95 against my account for the unsecured visa.
I requested cancellation. Customer Service International instructed me that a cancellation fee of $29.95 would be charged against my account instead. After some research on the companies and their practices (particularly this web site), I fully understand that this is a scam.
I contacted my bank before the money was to be taken out of the account and they advised me to freeze the account. I must also open a new bank account.
I have filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau of Upstate New York. (they have over 50 other complaints on file) I also filed a complaint with the FTC.
Additional phone number I found for People's Rebate: 514-448-6021. Additional address: 10 Sunshine Blvd., Champlain, New York 12919. I am interested to find out if anybody has the name and address of People's Rebate from thier bank account statement. Who is getting the money? Please reply if you know.
