New York Sports Club
Misleading Contract - membership

I have never posted a review about anything in my life, but feel so awful about my experience at this NYSC that I must!

I am a NYC Department of Education teacher. A very poor teacher on a tight budget, might I add. A few weeks ago, I received an email from my employer that was promoting a new deal where NYSC is partnering with students and teachers around the city and is offering a lifetime membership deal of $29.95/month with no activation fee. The email directed me to my nearest NYSC for more details and to sign up.

This deal sounded amazing, and even though there is a free gym in my building I was interested in being able to attend the evening group classes. I walked into the 91st Street Club last week and asked to hear more about this deal. The salesman that I met with told me that this was indeed a great deal, and asked if he could start the paperwork for my membership. I told him that I wanted clarification about the membership first: would there be any restrictions or limits? He clearly said "No." We then discussed how I wanted to attend classes and workout after 5pm when I was out of work and I proceeded to sign a contract.

I worked out multiple times over the past week and had a fine experience. Not the cleanest, but I did enjoy the TVs and interactive media programs on the ellipticals.

I never would have known that I was given incorrect information about my membership and contract if I hadn't referred a coworker to NYSC. I told my friend about the deal and she went to the 76th St. Club to sign up yesterday. However, she was immediately told that the membership is only for off-peak use. My friend said "no, that can't be - my friend just signed up with no restrictions" and the person she was working with looked up my account and provided her with my membership information. My friend just had to provide my name and the NYSC employee was showing my account to her. This is an outrageous violation of my privacy! Anyway, turns out that the salesman who signed me up blatantly lied to me and any time I used the gym between 4:30pm and 7:30pm, I would be charged $9.50. I had swiped in a few times during these hours and no one said a word to me. Not to mention, it didn't say anything about these restrictions in my signed contract.

To make a long story short, after my friend called me with this news about my membership, I cancelled and hope that I will be fully refunded. All I got was an "oops, sorry" from the guy who sold me the membership and then from the manager. Terrible customer service and outrageous dishonesty!
