Could not cancel first tickets after finding cheaper fare

I booked a roundtrip flight for 2 from Ft Lauderdale to St Thomas several months in advance on Spirit Airlines. Later I discovered the tickets were cheaper, but I could not cancel the first ones because I only checked REFUNDABLE on the flight there and not on the return flight.
