I was a First Virginia customer when it was bought by BB&T. I did not like the reps' attitude, so I stopped using the account and opened a new one with Chevy Chase. Last summer I decided to just close the account since I did not use it, so I went to the local branch, and they closed it and gave me about $23.00 in cash that I had in my account.
I received letters from them about applying for a BBT credit card many times, and I just trashed them. I recently got a letter from them saying that I owe BBT $1989.00. I went to the local branch (the same branch) and asked the same guy who closed my account: you gave me money back, so that means we are done and there is no more seeing BBT. He said there was another account that I was not aware of, a credit account under checking that they use for overdraft. I told him that he never mentioned such a thing when I was closing the account.
Today I received a letter saying to show up in court on May 7th. I do not know what to do at this point. Should I just pay them $1989.00?
Please help! Thanks.
