Mediacom doesn't want to keep existing customers. - City of Rogersville

My wife and I bought a house three years ago and had the cable installed about a year later. We were happy to find that the "new" cable company had rates that were comparable to what we paid when we were renting in a neighboring town.
Now, two years later, our contract runs out and our bill goes from $104/mo to $155. Ok, we knew this was going to happen, no surprises, we just need to call and sign another two year contract to get the rates back to where they were.
WRONG. After being transferred to a "Customer Service Specialist" I was told that even if i signed another two year contract I would still have to pay $142/mo because I am "not a new customer and those rates are only for new customers.".
But the story does not end there!
I started shopping around, like any American does when they think a product is overpriced.
Guess what! No other cable provider offers service in my area... NOT ONE! No wonder Mediacom thinks they can just raise the rates whenever and by however much they want because, "Hey, Its not like theyre going to just CANCEL the only cable television they can get!"
But the fact of the matter is, im thinking about doing just that.in this economy, there are about 100 things that I HAVE to spend my hard earned money on. Cable T.V. Is not one of them.
NEWSFLASH Mediacom, people can, and will, live without cable. Keep raising the price and eventually every budget will break.
