Grand Melia Resort Rio Grande Puerto Rico
Deceptive on-line reservation practices, one price quoted in e-mail confirmation another demanded upon checkin

Please be advised that the Grand Melia is not an ethical establishment. Originally I reserved a room just for myself with a total to be paid to the resort totaling $1584. When I altered the reservation on February 5, to add my colleague the total amount due to the hotel changed to $2084, a reasonable change given that an additional person was added. Both of us received e-mail confirmations from the resort titled "reservation modification" even though the only change shown was the total amount due, the e-mail was sent to her because I added her to the room.

Upon check in, I had my copy showing the amount due to hotel was $2084, Ms. Thomas did not have her copy and we were told that the hotel did not have any record of her being added. Clearly, this is a lie as the resort sent her an e-mail with the modified amount due (the modified reservation e-mail sent to Ms. Thomas from the Grand Melia). After arguing for an hour with the front desk manager we were hot and tired and wanted to get settled, so the credit card was run for $2612 with the understanding that $500 was going to be deducted because of incidentals that Ms. Thomas put on her card. On another occasion we inquired about the outrageous increase in the price and were told that the extra $650 was for taxes, again this is outrageous as there is nowhere in the United States where room taxes would be that high. Knowing that we had many problems and being concerned about being ripped off we requested our bill on the Saturday evening before our Sunday checkout, because the bill was $2184 we assumed that the Grand Melia came to its senses and were charging us the appropriate rate based on the e-mail that I showed the front desk attendant. The Grand Melia told me that they forgot to bill me for a night however, upon check out I signed a bill for $2185 and when I received my credit card statement, there was a separate bill for $427 this amount was not authorized nor signed for they ran the credit card number after I departed the premises. I only received a receipt showing that I was being billed for $2185.

The copy that the resort faxed to the credit card company for $427 was not signed and was run separately after I left the premises otherwise it would not have shown up on the credit card statement as separate charge. This is fraud and the resort
clearly is pulling some type of con. Additionally, the Grand Melia did not send my signed final bill to the credit card company, only the check in bill, which has an amount written in, not printed there is no initial or date, so there is no proof that the number was written upon check in but could have been added anytime, and some other print out with nothing on it and no
signature. We were told that we should go ahead and allow the charge to be run as we were continuing to work out the overcharging. There is no signature on file for the additional charge for $427. Again, from the beginning we were being overcharged based on the e-mail confirmations which are attached. I have contacted the Better Business Bureau and will be
contacting the Attorney General for further investigation of your on-line reservation practices.
