HairCuttery advertises that "walk-ins are welcomed." The sign should really read "non-black walk-ins are welcomed!"
I have walked into this particular Haircuttery on three different occasions. On this first occasion, I was told that the service I was requesting (wash and roller set) was only available to walkins arriving prior to 6 pm. I showed up at 5:50 pm but was told that I would not be served that night.
I saw other people (non-blacks), who came in after me, get served. I was furious because I clearly met the time constraint. But no matter what I said, the stylists working that night would not serve me. I escalated the issue to the manager and she ended up rolling my hair.
On the second occasion, I arrived at 3:30 pm. I requested the same service and I was told that there would be a 20 minute wait. So I waited even though I got the sense that they did not want me as a customer. I saw stylists sitting around, going to lunch, etc. They did not seem that busy.
At 4:20 pm, a different manager came up to me and said that they were busy and would not be able to set my hair. I asked if I could get a blowdry (a standard service). She still said no, that perhaps I should go to a different hair cuttery. Why was I waiting nearly an hour, I asked.
I think the racism at this particular HairCuttery is obvious. I will never go there again.
