Match 6 Month Guarantee is a scam — beware of the fineprint Internet

6 months ago I signed up for Match.com under a special program that promised my money back if I didn't meet anyone in 6 months. There was no mention of any particular requirements related to this in the agreement. Now, 6 months later, I have just been told there is a minimum requirement to send or respond to 5 emails a month. Apparently, I didn't do this the first month, so they are unwilling to honor the agreement.

The original promotion said nothing about this requirement, and in the entire 6 months of my membership I saw nothing related to this.

Honestly, in the entire 6 months, I found only two people I was the least bit interested in meeting, and one stood me up on the first date and the other looked nothing like his picture. The remaining people who contacted me were completely undesirable, so I was not at all interested in responding to them and giving encouragement. Had I known about this requirement, I absolutely could've written back "No Thanks" to 5 guys a month easily. What's the point in that? If they are using this to measure activity, they can certainly use other statistics that show I was logged in nearly daily throughout the 6 months. If I didn't find anyone I was interested in, why should I email them?

The way the guarantee actually works, contrary to how it was advertised (which read as if I would get my money back), is they will give you an additional 6 months for free, assuming you meet the above requirements.instead of doing that, they automatically renewed my membership for another 6 months, without authorization. I did get them to refund this second charge of $143, but not the original amount I wasted.

Match seems to be doing other things to scam their customers as well. I consistently found that I would get winks or favorited by great looking guys whose profile was not available when I would click on them, sometimes within minutes of when they winked at me. Match appears to be using old or even fictitious profiles to make contact with you so that you stay on the service in hopes that one of these guys is real and will repost their profile.

In my experience, the people on Match are no better than the ones on the free sites like OKCupid or Plenty of Fish, so save your money. Certainly don't sign up for this 6 month guarantee.
