On February 26th I made a phone call at a payphone at Chinatown Station in Los Angeles, CA. The call was to my husband at my (909) area code home phone number for no more than three minutes. I used my debit card to pay for the call. The next day I found out that the call was charged to me for $31.99.
When I called to complain, CTI Custom Teleconnect said the best they could do was to reduce the charge by 40% to $19.19 for a call that was worth 5o cents to a dollar, had I used coins to pay for the call. From your website I found out this company has been doing this to other people for years. I also found out that other people have complained that they were charged for calls they did not make by this company.
I also found out that my mom had a simular thing happen to her when she made a collect call once. I have learned from this experience that this company doesn't fear getting in trouble for what they are doing. I also learned if I don't have change in my hands or a phonecard to not make a phone call at a payphone.
I hope something can be done to prevent what happened not just to me but over again to many people. I would like for CTI Custom Teleconnect to be fined and for the future that payphones be required to tell you verbally the rate and fee you will be charged for your phone call just like they do when you use change to pay for a call.
