Regarding rebates processed by the clearinghouse known as "Young America", I can't list all my specific experiences - there are too many.
I am an IT consultant who frequently makes purchases on behalf of our clients. Manufacturers use rebates as a marketing tactic to make their products appear more cost effective. Over the years I have pursued these rebates wherever possible and my experience can be summed up as this:
Of all the rebates that I have submitted to Young America only about half have produced any results. The rest I never hear from. Of the half that I received anything about, about half of those produced results only after I followed up with them with letters (just try finding a phone number for these guys!) I now rarely pursue rebates because it simply isn't worth the time.
My advice to all is to ignore any rebates in your decision of which product to buy. If the product you purchase has a rebate and you actually recieve it - so much the better.
