I had been a loyal user of Sam's Club Discover since 2007 since I own two businesses and routinely shop at Sam's. Sometime in the fall of 2009 the card kept getting declined, but only at Sam's Club. Anywhere else, it worked. Keep in mind I never missed a payment and generally paid off the monthly balance in full. This happened 10-12 times at least, at the register while other customers are waiting. Each time they eventually resolve it w/a manager's help or I have to go to the service desk, get on the phone w/Discover and then check out. Basically an extra 10-15 minutes of brutality. As to why the card keeps getting declined, "they're not sure." They send me a new card. Same thing. A month later, they send me another new card, w/o me even asking. More humiliation in the checkout line. Finally I told them to close the account. While still on the phone it occurred to me, the cashback rewards (which I have never received at all). I told them keep it open for that reason but I will no longer use the card since it always gets declined. The cashback check was supposed to have been sent FEB 27 (roughly $500), at least that's what I was told over the phone numerous times. The check never came - "oh, there was a mistake - it'll go out in two weeks." Again, it never came. This time I was told I had to redeem online. After sitting on the phone w/them for 30 minutes, it was determined I couldn't log in because the account was closed. Since the account was closed, I was not eligible for the rewards. This is a much condensed version of the whole scenario, which includes countless phone calls each time with a different story. If it doesn't make sense, well it's because it never made sense to me either. I cannot actually do justice here in fully describing Discover's level of incompetence - they are off the charts. Like I said I own two business (sports bars), and as a result of this we no longer accept Discover. Combined about $1.5 million in sales so that $500 is a pittance compared to what it will cost them in merchant fees over the long haul. I urge anyone reading this to NEVER deal w/this evil company. Go to COSTCO/RESTAURANT DEPOT and avoid Sam's/Discover at all costs if you can. And if you are merchant don't accept them, you will lose virtually no business (they will find another way to pay, they are used to Discover not being accepted). I still have to go to Sam's for certain things and it hurts my soul because they and Discover are partners. The fact that a busy person is taking time to do this should tell you everytthing you need to know. The went OUT OF THEIR WAY to do me wrong and after the 10th time "we're sorry doesn't cut it." That said if they had simply mailed me the check they OWE me I would not be here. I'm still in utter awe of this company, and wonder how fast I would be out of business (a month, maybe?) if I treated my customers this way.
