Discover's Protection Plan only seems to protect the payments for the plan. Recently I had surgery and my husband took over paying the bills while I was getting better. He noticed the protection plan payment on my Discover card bill and called them to stop the payment.
He was told he could not stop the payment, only I could do that (understandable). He told them I was in the hospital and was unable and they told him, I would have to call back. He was never told he could activate the account to take care of what they were supposed to take care of (me, while I was out of work)
I am back at work after several months of physical therapy, pain meds... And my husband told me I needed to close that acct. I never actually remembered opening it but that would be my fault for not noticing the charge on my bill. I called to close and after 30 minutes of punch this number and that, talked with two people who tried to talk me out of closing, (cause it's such a great plan) while I asked them why my husband couldn't activate the benefits at least while I was sick. No one had an answer for that and now that I am back at work I was told it could not be claimed because it is not retroactive. (also at the end of the conversations with these people I was transferred to a CLOSED department to cancel the payments on my bill, had to call back again the next day).
My main complaint with this company is if my husband could not close the account, why wasn't he told he could activate the benefits? I know they knew I was in the hospital because -Angel, in the Oklahoma office-read me the information that was discussed with my husband, which included the fact that he told them I was having surgery.
BOTTOM Line-
It seems this protection plan will not allow a relative to file a claim and if the relative doesn't know what the plan is for, will not volunteer that information to them (what if you are in a coma?) Just another company that is ripping us off and yes I do pay more attention to my statments now.
