I signed a lease with this apartment complex but was not allowed to see the actual apartment, as someone was currently living in it. They showed me a showroom unit, which was obviously very well furnished, cleaned, and most importantly, quiet. However, it looked nothing like the actual apartment I was to live in. So, be forewarned, this is their trick.
After they collected my John Hancock, the apartment STILL was not ready for me to move in because they were making repairs to it. So, they allowed me to stay in the showroom unit for a week. Nice of them, but mind you I still had no idea what they actual apartment looked like or where it was positioned relative to the Garbage dumpsters, of which there were two directly outside. These were extremely noisy, and I specifically emphasized how important it was for me to have a QUIET apartment. Not only this but it was first floor and right next to the street. I have records to prove how many domestic disturbances there were in apartment above me and to the side of me. These neighbors were also always playing their music extremely loud at all hours of the night. Police were called out several times but landlord did nothing. I made several complaints to her about them but she blew me off.
After I had been in my apartment for about a week, I realized that nothing worked properly, so they had not really finished their "repairs". The A/C, the refridgerator, the toilet, both sinks, the carpet, and the blinds. I have copies of work orders for these items. They were quite literally fixing something everyday in my apartment for the first month. After this month, these things still never worked properly.
I complained to landlord. She once again blew me off. I asked for another unit that was livable and quiet. They said they couldn't do anything for me. I threatened to move unless they found me something. Still nothing. I asked out of the lease. They said no. I moved anyways b/c I was spending over $1k/week living in hotels since I could not sleep here. I was, at the time, having health issues and desperately needed a good nights sleep. But none of this seemed to concern my landlord. They reported this on my credit report and it has prevented me from getting into another apartment for the past three years, even though I am WELL within my rights as a renter to have moved out of this apartment complex. So, just be forewarned. This place is a dump. Their apartments are in shambles, and they care nothing about their renters.
