Rip-off playing games to get money

I received a phone call from AT&T offering me a free cell phone in April. My phone was getting old, and with the new upgrades AT&T was doing it would no longer be supported. I bought the story and agreed to accept the phone and an earpiece at no charge.

A month after I received the phone I then received the bill. I was told the phone was free. I called AT&T to dispute the charges only to find out that they had written in my records that I called to upgrade my service. I never called anyone; I was the one called at home. The only reason I listened to the phone person was because it was AT&T, my wireless service. I usually hang up right away when solicited.

After explaining my story over and over to numerous people that couldn't do anything for me I finally spoke with someone who could. He said that he would send me a return label and that I should use my phone until it arrives, due to the fact that I was billed a month in advance.

The following month I got another bill that had increased considerably and of course no return label. I phoned again to find out that I had to start explaining my story all over again, the customer service rep. Forgot to service the customer. No notes of my previous conversations had been taken, and no one could help me. I love being put on hold for ten min. To start over again and again with the same story.

Finally I got some ones supervisor on the phone that said she would send me a return label and freeze my account until it arrived. She then told me that I would be responsible for $25.55 after the phone was deducted; I then had her render my account inactive. The label took a couple of weeks to arrive. When the label got here my wife mailed the phone off with check #2233 for the specified amount. I was to believe the situation was taken care of. Not only was I lied to in the first place, then jerked around on the phone with a bunch of people not doing a good job, but last night I received a collection notice from Diversified Adjustment service. WOW, this is about a cell phone from AT&T.

I called this collection company who told me to submit a letter disputing the charges. I have spent more of my time trying to correct AT&T's bullshit than I care to spend ever again in my life. I called AT&T to find out once again that no notes had been kept on my account. I told my story over a couple more times, and finally spoke with a lady in the final billing dept. She didn't need to deal with my attitude and didn't ask a lot of questions. She seemed to get to the facts and try to clear this up for me, I was informed by her that she got confirmation of the returned phone and the cashed check #2233.

I hope this is the last time I have to deal with AT&T, but now I need my credit report adjusted. This corporate America is the most chicken shit way to conduct business. Someone calls me up, Lies to me, jerks me around when I try to fix their mistake, then give me a bad mark on my credit for their negligence. What does a young American trying to keep his record clean for the future of his family do in a situation like this?

Are we supposed to roll over and accept the way major companies can toy with our lives and our money? Having millions of customers I am sure AT&T could give a damn, who does? Is there any organization out there to limit what major companies can do to average Human beings?

Wondering why we bother,

Dustin M. Smith
