Fidelity Reader Service
Felt like a scam to me

I wondered why I opened the door - usually I don't. Anyway, there were 2 young men. They said that they were trying to get points and gave me a strong sales pitch. They wanted to go to Rome, and they claimed they were practicing public speaking.

Anyway, I signed up for a magazine subscription - about $60. They were very nice -smooth. They claimed that if I paid cash, they will receive more points. I decided to pay by credit card. I knew something was fishy when the person that was speaking to on the phone (to verify subscription) asked me for my security code from my credit card. I refused to give it to them. I never give that out. The salesperson mentioned that if I paid by credit card or check, I could cancel in 14 days. I really didn't see that in writing.in fact, it said I had 3 days to cancel by mail according to the form.

He showed me his ID at the store, and he mentioned that the company is registered with the BBB. When they left, my senses kicked in. They were too smooth. I decided to go on-line to check things out. I found out that the company is not registered with the BBB. The company has an "F". I found out that the subscription price was way too high, too. I can get it for much, much cheaper.

I called my credit card company to cancel my card and transaction. I will also send in the cancellaton notice - registered mail - just in case.

I learned several lessons: 1) I really should learn to say no, and if I need to be a b* about it - so be it. I think I was trying to be polite, and I need to learn to be more aggressive. Sometimes I just have to be rude or forceful when I'm pressured. 2) Just because someone says the company is with BBB doesn't mean it is - check it out first for yourself. 3) Don't buy from door-to-door salespeople - if you wanted a subscription, you would have already had one -and for much cheaper! Don't be obligated to buy something you don't really want. If they want to go to Rome or something, they can always find a better job, work hard, and save for it. 4) I glad I refused to give out my security code. I read somewhere that no one should do this.

Hope this helps, and if you are still the "too polite" person, or you tend to be gullible, don't answer the door until you have enough balls to say no. You also should let any salesperson get in your home.
