While I was working a summer job during the summer of someone contacted me by phone asking me to complete a survey. The survey consisted mainly of questions regarding what forms of payment I used most frequently. After completing a phone survey while performing my job duties, the person asked for my name and if it was ok to have a complimentary magazine sent to my workplace. I agreed to recieve the free magazine.
After I left for the summer, one of my co-workers contacted me saying that a bunch of magazines had arrived for me along with a billing invoice. I contacted the company and told the representative that I never agreed to a magazine subscription, they asked for my phone number and home address so that they could check the account and contact me later. I was informed that the magazine subscriptions were through some other company and that the bill was now well over $700. I was told I could cancel the account by paying $120. I never paid the amount and began recieving calls from "unknown" on my cell phone.
I moved from my apartment for other reasons, and my roommate said I was receiving more invoices from Publishers Business Services. I answered one and tried to sort this ordeal out, once again I got the same answers. So I stopped answering my phone when the caller id said "unkown". I began recieveing very unprofessional voicemails, the person never left their name but said they were with Publisher's Business Services and that I had an oustanding balance on an account. I even recieved a voicemail from "unknown" saying "It's all about the benjamins."
Eventually I had enough of these calls and answered another call. This person told me that they would have to file some sort of paper work with their collections department unless I paid. I told the person that I didn't know when I'd be able to pay, so they filled the paperwork. That was over two months ago, it is now May 1st and since then I haven't recieved anymore phone calls from "unkown". So it seems the situation resolved itself.
