I really do not have a problem with self-checkout machines in stores if they are a CHOICE. Last year I went and bought my monthly groceries at Albertson's and had a huge basketful of groceries to pay for. It was 10 at night at a 24-hour store. I recently had had surgery and it had really taken a lot out of me just to get the groceries chosen. I got to the front of the store and was told there were NO cashiers after 10 and I had to check myself out??? Wtf??? I explained I could not do that, and the store begrudgingly had someone run my items out through the self-checkout line while I stood there feeling like a fool. Has it surprised me that Albertson's is doing horribly and have closed down many of their stores??? And then yesterday, I went to IKEA at 11:30 A.M.in the morning. The checkout area was packed with people and there was not ONE SINGLE dedicated cashier checking items out. You had to do self checkout or you were pretty much SOL. I have been in an email volley with the manager at this IKEA all day with him insisting that there were dedicated people to help with self-checkout, but refuses to give me an answer as to why there were no regular lines open. Like I said, I really have no problem with self checkout as long as I have a choice. If I am buying one or two items... Fine. But due to medical conditions, I really can't do major purchases through self checkout. It's ridiculous!
