Court fine turned over to them 3/21/07 automatic 35% charge/fee added to assigned amount unconscionable

I got a letter from Alliance One today stating I owed 666.45 which breaks down to 493.50 (what I had left to pay on my court fine). 22 (assigned interest) 172.73 (other fees or charges). That is a whopping 35%. How can they do that?

I called and spoke to a very rude, condiscending girl named Erica that would not break down the fee only said it's what the courts had tacked on.

After many back and forths with her trying to get an understanding of this crazy fee I said this is bullsh*t I have been paying out the a* trying to take care of this and that I had been paying on it (Payed $100 2/15 $800 2/28 fine started at $1393.50) and I want to fight it she said that the fee is irreversable and there is nothing the court or they can do to take it off.

Then she said she would notify the courts of my refusal to pay and of my vulgarity and attitude. Shocked I asked her to repeat herself and stated I did not say I wasn't going to pay only had issue with this unexplained fee and then asked to speak to a manager.

Supervisor Rebecca got on the phone after a LONG wait and I complained about the rude treatment I had received and she simply said that that was not Erica's character but she would review her (the rude ones) notes on the conversation.

Then she explained that the fee was charged to the court by Alliance One to take the case and that it get's tacked on to my already owed amount. I asked what is the breakdown for that, is there a %. She stated it was 25%. Which makes the fine around $123. Which was a lie!

How can they get away with this outrageous charge without even giving you a chance to pay it off in full?
I am working back in town tomorrow and planned to get down to courthouse to pay the rest off. I asked the supervisor if I payed the 493.50 now could they get rid of the fee. Nope.

They got the amt.in collections on March 21, letter typed March 22 and I noticed the postage on letter was dated March 27 received today March 29. Which the amount has been accruing interest while they waited to send out the letter. What a RIP OFF!!!

When does the 30 days start? Can they legally charge that fee without giving the opportunity to pay before it? I want to pay off the rest of my court fine but don't want that to show an acceptance of their fee and also don't want to be allowing interest to pile on.
