I had a check for $4.90 written in 2005 that came back for insufficient funds (some fraudulent tranaction went through my account at the time and overdrew it). I received a letter from TRS Recovery asking for $34.90, the amout of the check and the bounced check fee, which I sent them a money order for. I never heard anything more from them, so I assumed the bill was paid.
Just recently I opened a new account and was wrote a check to pay my Sprint bill, when I was told that the check was denied. I called the number that the sales person gave me for Telecheck and was referred to TRS recovery, where that rep told me that the check was still outstanding. Unfortunately, I do not have the money order receipt anymore, but I told the the rep that I would send another one to clear my name out the database. He told me that his company didn't have the account anymore and gave me a number to call. I did so and was referred to the Rephen Law Firm.
When I called them, I sopke to an Amanda Robinson, who told me that the debt was now $134.90. When I asked why I had to pay an extra hundred dollars, she got nasty and said they had the right to add the fees, according to the the Uniform Code. When I asked her what that was, she told me to look it up myself. I also asked her if I could receive a letter stating the charges and what they were for, she said the law firm does not send out letters and that the onlyu methou of payment they would accept was through Western Union.
I believe this is a horrible and fraudulent way to do business and I have trouble believing that a reputable law firm would treat people this way.in addition, after my phone conversation with Ms. Robinson, I called TRS Recovery back and asked them hypothetically, if they still had the account how much would I have to send. No surprise. They told me $34.90.
This law firm needs to be taken to court and the lawyers disbared for blatantly violating the Fair Debt Collections Act.
