In the Perspective section of the EAST VALLEY
TRIBUNE, Paul Green presented an article entitled
"License to Bully", in which he puts a great deal
about police powers into correct perspective.
(September 30)

"When we think of American freedom, what we
basically have in mind is the right, if we are not
bringing harm to the community, to be left alone."

"That is right neither the kinds of old nor the
fascists of Europe, nor the Communists of Asia
were ever willing to cede to their subjects."
"... Americans were protected by their Bill of
Rights...[and] did not have to put up with
arbitrary intrusion into their doings... And cringe
before authority."

He notes these basic, fundamental freedoms are in
"increasingly grave danger"...

He discusses Wilmington's notorious "Jump Out
Squads", rolling vans full of police startlingly
similar to the Nazi "Flying Squads" in occupied
Poland.

He discusses the diminishing qualifications for
searches, seizures, and arrests, the apparent
disappearance of probable cause,

He puts this in the context of the arrest of a
Chaparral coach, whose main "crime" seems to be
not showing proper deferential and fearful
reaction to the police.in other words, "contempt
of cop"...

He cites three of the usual bogus blanket charges
lodged in fraudulent cases: resisting arrest,
disorderly conduct, and obstruction of
governmental administration.in Mesa, this last
one is usually "interfering with a police
officer", and is frequently lodged when, as in a
friend's recent case, he was impatient to get to
work when an officer questioned the empty rifle
case he was carrying. The officer took this to
be suspicious. It cost my friend his job. Two
days in jail. Charges eventually dropped
completely.

Now, several East Valley Departments have notified
the public that firearms in cars, no matter
whether lawfully carried, will be confiscated and
subjected to NCIC/NCIS check, EVEN IF THE PARTY
INVOLVED HAS A CONCEALED WEAPONS PERMIT, AND EVEN
IF SUCH A SEARCH HAS BEEN CONDUCTED THAT VERY
DAY!!! So if you purchase a firearm as a gift,
this Christmas, buy it early... The police may
hold it for a while.

In fact, Mesa P.D. Has tried very hard to steal
several firearms that I know of, from legitimate
owners, and went so far as to manufacture FALSE
charges to justify or cover their actions.

Cops or not, this is not only unconstitutional, it
is illegal. It is, in fact, theft.

The coach involved in this recent incident seemed
to be trying to get a situation where his players
were being harassed under some kind of control,
and to generally move on with the celebratory
proceedings.

Scottsdale hit him with three fake charges: he
copped to a bogus "failure to obey" charge, will
pay a $293 fine and take "anger management"
courses. What hogwash!!!

Apparently, one of the Scottsdale officers slammed
the coach against a wall. Witnesses came
forward to suggest and prove that the entire
situation was badly handled by the "Law
Enforcement" clowns on the scene.

Like a great deal of what happens in the East
Valley, this is public authority gone OVER THE
TOP, used to pad egos, and completely
inappropriate.

Giving this monstrous conspiracy more power
because of other monsters who blew up New York
buildings is not only inappropriate, it is
criminal.

It is no coincidence that the Valley of the Sun is
home to two of the key investigative precedents
archetypal to lawful police conduct, the Miranda
and Escobedo decisions.

Police and courts and prosecutors here have a long
and storied history of pounding confessions out of
suspects, convicting erroneous people, lying,
manufacturing erroneous junk charges, killing
citizens, and having hissy fits like monster
five-year-olds when things do not go their way.

In my work, I have seen hundreds of police reports,
and most of them contain inferences and innuendo and
falsehoods which are downright impossible, even
contradictory.

Imagine a scumbag like Joe Arpaio with even more
power? Sorry. I would rather put a shark in
my swimming pool. If this valley had five times
the police it does now, it would be far LESS
SECURE... And it would also be totally bankrupt.

Law-abiding citizens always think the law works
for them, and that they will not be harassed
unless they do something wrong or stupid. But
that isn't how it works. How it works is: if you
kow-tow and grovel sufficiently in the face of
authority, kiss the correct butts, pay the
appropriate bribes, and do EVERYTHING you are
told, MAYBE you won't go to jail YET...

The police use of power and firearms is entirely
too casual and almost always excessive, frequently
strangely inappropriate.in Mesa, in particular,
it has to be STOPPED.
