I was so excited, thinking that my dream of being a "published author" had finally come true, when I signed up with Publish America, in Frederick, Maryland. And now, over 6 months later, I regret having done it before checking around. But, everyone else wanted money to publish my novel. One company wanted $12,500! And Publish America has been bragging that they pay their authors. Well, they did. $50.
Rather than this company telling me that they didn't "feel comfortable" publishing a romance story about a black woman falling in love with a white man, they published it; changed things in it, and refused to get my consent, or even ask me what I wanted the cover to look like. They designed it all, after telling me NOT to contact them, because I brought up a question of whether or not I'd be in violation of using MS Word pictures and letters from the software of "clip art" to come up with my cover design. They're charging $30 for the book, and I've had 4 people (my local library is one business) try and buy my book, and Publish America is refusing to sell it. I simply wanted them to be honest, and if they don't like my book, they DIDN'T have to publish it! So now I'm feeling seriously hostile, and can't find an attorney to do jackshit about it. I know this is wrong, but no one will lift a finger, because people think I'm just "using the race card" to complain about this.
