Preneed contract was at Singing Hills Funeral Home (owned by Laurel Land an affiliate of Restland Funeral Home). I cancelled after fourteen months; with living cost rising and a fixed income. When I cancelled, ten percent of the contract total and what they decided to call finance charges were taken from the monies I paid in. However, when I called about my refund, I was told it was for interest. They did not tell you that the interest after seven years made the cost double. I was told that I should have read my contract. I felt that the counselor should have explained the main points of all those pages of fine print. She explained the cost, item for item and I had to sign that she did.
I filed a complaint with the Dept of Insurance who forwarded it to the Dept of Banking in Austin. They sent me the section# that by law makes it permissable. How can it be lawful for a company to rob you of the money that you paid. The funeral home kept doing business as usual. You only had all these pages of fine print and a total cost. Other states have passed reforms to curb the worst abuses in the preneed market. Why not Texas?
