Took our car to Firestone for an alignment. They looked it over, told us they could not do the alignment because my master cylinder was "leaking oil everywhere" and my ball joints were "completely shot". They quoted us around $800 to fix these issues—not counting actually doing the original alignment that we wanted!
We took our car to our trusted mechanic. He's a bit of a drive so we didn't want to bother for "just" an alignment but decided to go to him because of the supposed major repairs. He looked over the car and said the ball joints were "completely fine" and our master cylinder was not, and had not been, leaking.
Basically, Firestone tried to LOOK nice by saying they were not going to do the alignment and they were losing money by refusing to do the job so that they could do the more expensive work instead—work that didn't actually need to be done.
